Warriors Volleyball Team wins NCCAA South Region
"I'm really proud of this team," exclaimed head coach Julia Reininga. "We came out a little rusty after having two and a half weeks off, but we were able to get going midway through the first set. Warner was a very tough team and our defense stepped up big today. I'm so happy for this team. They have really put in a lot of hard work this season. I'm looking forward to a great national tournament!
Sarah Hughey was named MVP and to the First Team All-Region team while Megan Widener and Paige O'Connor were also selected to the First Team. Libero Milica Stamenic was named to the Second Team while Reininga was named the NCCAA South Region Coach of the Year.
The Warriors won 25-22, 25-12, and 25-16 to clinch the match in three sets. Hughey led Southern Wesleyan with 14 kills and committed only two errors on 30 attempts. The senior also added nine digs defensively. O'Connor also recorded double digit kills, tallying 10 in the win. Kendall Vallancourt and Katie Andersonhad eight kills on the afternoon while Megan Widener had five,Shelby Sheets had two and Courtney O'Brien added one. Stamenic led the team with 18 digs while Widener contributed 38 assists and 11 digs. The Warriors hit .227, .467 and .412 in the three sets, respectively.
With the win today the Warriors locked up a spot in the NCCAA National Tournament held Dec. 3-5 in Kissimmee, Fla.
