Warriors Take Region, Qualify for Nationals
A first half goal was all Southern Wesleyan needed to claim the NCCAA South Region title on Saturday, defeating Shorter University 1-0 to earn a bid to the NCCAA National Tournament.
Richie Barbetty netted the game’s only goal in the 25th minute off a pass from Bruno Liozzi. The Warriors (12-6-2) dominated the shot count, firing off 20 to just nine for the Hawks. Twelve of the Warriors’ shots were on target, forcing Nicolas Ferrigno to make 10 saves. Ruben Rodriguez made five saves of his own for SWU.
With the win the Warriors are guaranteed of a spot in the NCCAA National Tournament in Kissimmee, Fla. beginning on Dec. 2. Each team is guaranteed two matches in pool play before the top four teams earn placement to the semifinals which will begin on Friday, Dec. 6.
