Track & Field Team excels at Wildcat Invitational
The Warriors saw 20 top-5 finishes, 13 school records and nine new NCCAA individual qualifiers on Saturday. The women had 13 of those top-5 finishes including the lone winner in Brandi Jackson in the 400 meters.
Jackson turned in a time of 58.62, breaking her old record by nearly a full second. Also in the 400, Lavornne Taylor and Jordan Hargrave placed 3rd and 6th.
On the men's side Jhante McMillan turned in the best finish on the day, placing 2nd in the 200 with a time of 22.54. McMillan was also part of the 4x200 relay team that placed 2nd with a time of 1:32.30, setting a new school record in the process. Other members of that relay were Marquise Jackson, Xavier Foster and Nick Edwards.
The women's 4x200 relay team of Amy Barton, Lavornne Taylor, Shy'keya Wimberly and Morgan Haney also took 2nd with a time of 1:44.67, another school record. Barton also set new school marks in the 60 (7.82) and the 200 (25.95) with a 5th and 3rd place finish.
Three women participated in the pentathlon as the first competitors in program history with Deandra Tsaffaras taking 3rd, Olivia Bush 4th and Logan Thiel 5th. All three also qualified for the NCCAA Indoor Meet with their point totals.
In the field Roman Wright set new records in the long jump (5.92 meters) and the triple jump (12.67 meters) for the men. Wright placed 5th in the triple jump. Darion Elmore took 4th in the high jump with a mark of 1.86 meters.
On the women's side Kia Tillman placed 5th in the long jump with a mark of 5.36 meters as Amber King jumped 10.64 meters in the triple jump to place 4th. Kiunah Fye also claimed a top-5 placement, taking 5th in the high jump at 1.52 meters.
AJ Campbell bettered his school mark in the weight throw with a toss of 9.68 meters. Caleb George set a new mark in the 600 meters with a time of 1:32.18. The women also saw new school records in the 600 (Kira Emmett – 1:47.35), 4x800 relay (10:28.27) and pole vault (Kayla Eison – 2.44 meters).
The men's 4x400 relay team (Foster, McMillan, Jackson, Jaymin Harris) placed 3rd in the meet while the women's "B" team (Hargrave, Last, Wimberly, Grant) was 4th after the "A" team was disqualified.
Wimberly was a finalist in the 60m hurdles, placing 6th with a time of 9.50. On the men's side, both Jaymin Harris and Xavier Foster were also finalists in the same event, placing 7th and 8th respectively.
The Warriors will wrap up the non-championship portion of their indoor season next weekend at East Tennessee State for a two-day meet beginning on Friday.
