Thornton appointed to commission
Dr. Mona Thornton is serving a four-year term as an Alternate that became effective July 1. CAEP governs more than a thousand educator preparation programs.
“The appointment is a testament to Dr. Thornton’s qualifications and her commitment to excellence in teacher preparation,” said Dr. Sandra McLendon, dean of Southern Wesleyan’s School of Education.
The School of Education was recently re-accredited by the Continuous Improvement Commission of CAEP. This accreditation term lasts until the Fall of 2021. The School of Education has begun preparing for the transition to CAEP, which is succeeding the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
The appointment means Thornton has a unique opportunity to “shape” CAEP as a new accrediting body, serving within its first permanent governance structure.
“I am thankful to be in this extraordinary environment at an exciting time,” Thornton said. “Dr. McLendon works tirelessly at enhancing and expanding our School. It is amazing to watch her make sure that SWU is at the table and involved in whatever new initiatives are being introduced or implemented in our state.”
