Students donate to Kenya Ministry
A cancelled missions trip did not stop the mission. Southern Wesleyan University Professor Dr. Paul Shotsberger and a team of students were preparing to travel to Kenya to assist the Transforming Nations ministry. Since the ministry was started in October 2015 in Kisumu County, Kenya, Transforming Nations has opened an orphanage and rehabilitation center for homeless children, established a widow’s ministry and started a Bible school. They also are actively involved in the planting of new churches. Shotsberger has known Transforming Nations founder and president Mike Reznik for many years, going back to a time they served together in Ukraine.
The global COVID-19 pandemic led to the trip’s cancellation, but the Southern Wesleyan team still wanted to support Transforming Nations in a tangible way.
Axel Sawyer, an Early Childhood Education major and one of the students in the team, was among those who decided to donate his trip deposit money.
“Out of the $200 deposit, $100 was supposed to go to the airline for a cancellation fee. I had already planned on donating the other $100. When the airline decided to return the cancellation fee because of the global pandemic, I made the easy decision to donate this as well,” said Sawyer. “I knew that Transforming Nations would be impacted financially by this pandemic, …they … still had orphanages to run, people to feed, etc. I decided that this money would be best used but them, not by me.”
Southern Wesleyan University is thankful for the generosity of Axel and others in financially supporting this important ministry.
