Southern Wesleyan University’s Communications Department was among Upstate media and public relations professionals named winners in the 2011 Media Women of South Carolina Communications Contest.

“This contest provides professionals with evaluation and feedback from a source outside their own organization which is a tremendous tool for growth and development. Nine women from South Carolina will now have their work evaluated at the national level. It’s an incredible opportunity and honor,” said Kim Atchley, MWSC president.

Southern Wesleyan University’s Communications Department submitted three entries in the contest and won three awards: first place for Focus magazine, editing; first place for the university web site, www.swu.edu; and second place for Focus magazine, four-color publication.

Janelle Beamer, director of communications at Southern Wesleyan, said she is pleased that the university has been recognized for its communications.

“It is such an honor to receive these awards from the Media Women of South Carolina. We work hard to promote our university and it is wonderful to receive this level of recognition.” Beamer said.

MWSC contest first-place entries have been submitted to the national contest, which is in the judging phase now. National winners will be honored at the NFPW Annual Conference and Awards Banquet in September.

Since 1980, MWSC has been the state affiliate for the National Federation of Press Women, a dynamic nationwide organization of professionals involved in careers across the ever-growing communications spectrum.

MWSC’s annual Communications Contest provides an opportunity to compete in a wide range of categories, and it encourages and rewards excellence in communication. Entries are judged by leaders in their fields of expertise.
