School District of Pickens County names SWU graduate Teacher of the Year
Johnson is a business education and agriculture teacher at Liberty High School. Pickens County School Superintendent Dr. Danny Merck recognized Johnson during the school district’s Back-to-School Celebration at Easley High School. Johnson is also eligible to apply for South Carolina Teacher of the Year.
Having earned an MBA from Southern Wesleyan in 2012, Johnson said he didn’t take the traditional route to enter the classroom. He was a horticulturalist for Clemson University for several years, and says he was inspired by his parents, who were both educators in Pickens County. His mother, Judy Johnson, attended Southern Wesleyan when it was known as Central Wesleyan College.
“This is truly a calling for me,” Johnson said. “I love going to school every day and making a difference in the lives of kids.” He’s now into his fourth year as a teacher.
Johnson says that he tries to model the one-on-one instruction he received as a Southern Wesleyan student with his own students at Liberty High.
