Schaupp joins American Leprosy Missions staff
Darren Schaupp, a 1991 SWU Christian ministry graduate, was recently named director of program operations for American Leprosy Missions, the nation’s oldest and largest Christian, anti-leprosy organization.
The Greenville-based organization is devoted to curing and caring for people with leprosy and related diseases. Schaupp brings to his new job 20 years of experience working in both the private sector and non-profit organizations, including experience as a consultant for humanitarian organizations.
"Darren’s expertise in systems development and experience living and working in Africa will make him a perfect addition to our program department," said American Leprosy Missions President Bill Simmons. "Darren is also passionate about sharing the love of Jesus with some of the world’s most marginalized people – those with leprosy – in some of the most impoverished places on earth. We look forward to his contributions as we continue our fight against leprosy and related diseases."
Schaupp will arrive at American Leprosy Missions from Samaritan’s Purse where, among other things, he helped grow the Ethiopian office, led an expansion of emergency famine relief in East Africa and developed global field management guidelines. He and his wife Cindi, a 1990 SWU early childhood education graduate and a member of the university's library staff, served for nearly 10 years in Kenya and Ethiopia.
His non-profit experience also includes six years as program director and regional networker for Eastern Mennonite Missions. Schaupp also received a master of arts degree in cross cultural studies from Asbury Theological Seminary.
“It will be an honor to work with an historic organization like American Leprosy Missions,” said Schaupp. “I look forward to being part of a team which uses the weight of its resources to bring healing and hope to some of the most vulnerable people in our world.”
American Leprosy Missions is dedicated to curing and caring for people affected by leprosy and related diseases. It currently operates in 15 countries in Africa, Asia and the Americas. During its more than 100-year history, American Leprosy Missions has provided holistic care to four million people around the world, including medical treatment and training, Christian outreach, prevention of disability, community development and vaccine research.
