Returning SWU Online Student Receives Alpha Sigma Lambda Scholarship
Current Early Childhood and Family Studies student, Karen Weber of South Central Pennsylvania, has become the first Southern Wesleyan University student to receive the ASLHS Dr. Rollin Posey Scholarship. She was a top-five finisher among the twenty recipients. Alpha Sigma Lambda awards scholarships to adult learners who are pursuing their first undergraduate degree.
Karen’s story is one of perseverance, as she is a returning adult student. Dr. Priscilla Hammond, Chapter Councilor of SWU’s Omicron Sigma Chapter of ASLHS, has had a front-row seat to Weber’s success, “I worked with Karen to make sure she had everything she needed to complete an excellent application, but it was really her scholarship that made her stand out. Her reference letters from all of her instructors were glowing. She was a student at SWU years ago and she had to leave to go home to her family. She returned years later as an online student, completing her associate’s degree and now she’s on her way to a bachelor’s degree in early childhood and family studies.”
Dr. Laura Black, Professor Emerita of English, taught Karen in Freshman English in the 80s and again in Children’s Lit this past fall. Dr. Black also spoke highly of Karen, "Mrs. Weber is a delightful student—conscientious, well prepared, inquisitive, and extremely bright. In addition, her positive outlook and personality have earned her the respect of both her peers and her teachers. She is a multi-talented woman with a clear focus. For example, in addition to home schooling all six of her own children, she has enjoyed a successful career as a copy editor and medical transcriptionist. Additionally, she has been active as a special needs advocate and community volunteer. More importantly, Mrs. Weber has consistently succeeded in her academic endeavors, as evidenced by the fact that she has a 3.98 average. She is currently working on learning Turkish. She also plays the flute for the worship team at her church, where she helps with the nursery and the AWANA children’s program. Moreover, she helps out with community events like God’s Puzzle Pieces for special needs individuals and volunteers at the YMCA in their child care program."
Karen was inducted into the Alpha Sigma Lambda Honor Society this spring at Honors Convocation.
