Pirates invade Southern Wesleyan
Southern Wesleyan University students rehearse for their roles as pirates in “Pirates of Penzance.”
Southern Wesleyan University presented a hilarious evening with Gilbert and Sullivan’'s “Pirates of Penzance.”
The production opened March 19 and continued March 25-27, 2010 at Folger Fine Arts Auditorium on the university’s campus in Central.
“Pirates of Penzance” follows the adventures of Frederick as he makes plans with the beautiful Mabel, only to discover that he must remain a pirate apprentice some 60 years past his 21st birthday.
“I like pirates and the music is really fun,” said Dr. Melanie Rowell, assistant professor of music and director of the musical. “I wanted to find something to appeal to the student population and present a good educational experience.”
Rowell said the performers are enjoying the swordplay during rehearsal. Although the swords are not real, Rowell added that cast members are being trained in how to fight safely.
“I love to be involved in school productions because they bring everybody together,” said Tina Collins, a student who plays the role of pirate William Fitz William.
Andy Dixon, who plays Frederick, said “So far, it has been kind of difficult, but it is a lot of fun.”
Rowell said that she and the cast members are excited about “Pirates of Penzance” and adds that the musical will be enjoyable for young and old alike.
