Men’s basketball team hosts boys school
Southern Wesleyan University’s Men’s Basketball Team played host to the Cherokee Creek Boys School (CCBS) youth Aug. 30.
The 10 boys and their coach/counselor, Yanic McDowell, joined the team in the dining commons and enjoyed dinner prior to going to the gym to participate in a mini-camp designed specifically for their visit. The SWU men’s team taught drills and skills and thoroughly enjoyed working with the youth. Coach Charles Wimphrie has invited them to attend a home game during the 2012-2013 season. “These young boys are away from their immediate families and have experienced difficult situations in their short life. They need someone to help build their self-esteem while teaching them accountability for their actions. "I came from a broken home so I can identify with them and their situation. I thank God for allowing my coaching staff and the team to use basketball to reach out and encourage them to make good decisions in life,” said Charles Wimphrie, SWU head men's basketball coach.
Cherokee Creek Boys School is located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Westminster. CCBS is accredited by Southern Associations of Colleges and Schools and is designed specifically for struggling, troubled boys ages 11-15 with or without special needs. The boys live at school, away from all the hustle and bustle of everyday life. For these students a quiet, calm environment is what is needed to allow them to develop into the best young men they can be. Athletics is considered to be a large part of their therapy and a bouncing basketball is heard on a regular basis at CCBS. Wimphrie hopes what they learned at the mini-camp will encourage the boys to aspire to attend college and give them a brighter future.
