Hylen to coordinate doctoral studies at Southern Wesleyan University
Southern Wesleyan University appointed Dr. Michael Hylen as graduate faculty and coordinator of doctoral studies and associate professor of education starting on June 1.
Hylen has an earned Ph.D. from the University of Missouri–St. Louis in educational policy studies. He also earned his MA in education, educational leadership and policy studies from the University of Missouri and a BS degree from Northeastern University in Boston, Mass.
Hylen taught online for Louisiana State University-Shreveport in education leadership studies and curriculum and instruction departments. Before teaching at LSUS, Hylen served as an associate professor/department chair of graduate studies in education at Asbury University. Additionally, he has served in various Missouri schools in administrative and teaching roles, including serving as a principal at schools in St. Louis, St. Charles and Springfield.
Hylen’s publications have included “Servant Leadership and Principal Preparation: A Christian University Perspective,” in the Journal of Character Education; and “Growing Up Mobile: How do Today’ Preservice Teachers Feel about Integrating Mobile Phones in their Classrooms?” in Proceedings of the Society for Information Technology and Teacher Education Internal Conference 2020. He has also presented papers or refereed at numerous national and international conferences. Hylen was one of six finalists for Professor of the Year at LSUS and was awarded by the University of Missouri, St. Louis, for excellence in research. He also belongs to the Association for Moral Education, the Association for Independent Liberal Arts Colleges for Teacher Education and the National Alternative Education Association.
Hylen’s interest in teaching at SWU stems from his desire to return to a full-time faculty position in a Christian university where he could also serve the on-campus and in local communities.
