Students dressed in “Warrior” garb run across Childs Soccer Field prior to the start of the Men’s Soccer game vs. North Greenville University Oct. 25 during SWU’s 2014 Homecoming celebration.

The Southern Wesleyan University Warrior mascot poses with Madalyn Mills, a religion major from Kernersville, N.C., crowned Homecoming Queen; and Mark Cromer, a biology major from Temperance, Mich., crowned Homecoming King.

Southern Wesleyan University alumni, family members and friends joined current students at Central to “Fill the Hill” during Homecoming, Oct. 24 and 25.

Homecoming festivities began this past Friday with tailgating and games outside Historic Tysinger Gymnasium and a victory of the Warriors Volleyball Team over North Greenville University’s Crusaders, 3-0 (25-20, 25-14, 25-12) in a battle between two Upstate Conference Carolinas foes.

Saturday’s activities began with Run2Fall, a 5k race run through the Central campus, won by Alex Pena of Anderson. While some donned their running shoes, others brought their clubs, practicing golf shots and testing their skills the M.L. Atcheson Putting Green at the P.B. Wood Golf Practice Facility. Later that morning, many alumni enjoyed coffee and desserts while meeting University President Todd Voss and his wife Julie at Blue Hill Coffee and Tea Co. During Homecoming Chapel, Religion Professor Bob Black gave an inspirational and entertaining message after energetic praise and worship from the University Singers. The 2014 Homecoming Court was also presented during chapel.

Southern Wesleyan then had its first Homecoming Parade along Wesleyan Drive, with floats from the SWU community and even Herbie the Love Bug. The Women’s Volleyball Team won the competition among parade entrants.

As the parade wound down, the grilling had already begun in preparation for reunion luncheons as alumni from across the years joined for a picnic-style lunch at Bryant Lodge. Also, potential future SWU students enjoyed the inflatables beside Childs Soccer Field.

Conference Carolinas athletic competition continued at Childs Field as The Women’s Soccer Team was defeated by the Crusaders this past Saturday 1-0. The Men’s Soccer Team came up with a 7-1 victory over the Crusaders.

Highlights also included SWU’s Choral Ensemble performing the National Anthem and the university’s Alma Mater, as well as the Warrior Run and the Homecoming Court processional during halftime of the Men’s Soccer game. Madalyn Mills of Kernersville, N.C. was crowned the 2014 Homecoming Queen and Mark Cromer of Temperance, Mich., was crowned Homecoming King.

Saturday’s festivities concluded with “SWU’s, Blues and BBQ’s,” as barbecue was served at Bryant Lodge and a jazz group composed of local musicians entertained.
