    Highlights of 2017 included a continuing trajectory of enrollment growth at Central, the opening of an exciting new living and learning community and hosting thousands of eclipse viewers. See more below, and click on any slideshow image for the full story.

    Southern Wesleyan University dedicated its new amphitheater in honor of evangelist Dr. Clyde Dupin April 12 at Central. Dupin has been considered the “Billy Graham of Small Town U.S.A.”

    SWU is establishing itself as a prime destination for hosting summer camps and conferences, as evidenced by "Never The Same" (NTS) camps, which hosted approximately 770 middle and high school students when it returned to Central in 2017.

    SWU received approval for a new degree program that will benefit nurses seeking professional advancement in health care.

    Thousands came to SWU in Central to experience a total solar eclipse Aug. 21. Eclipse Over Pickens County was organized by SWU, Pickens County, the town of Central and many key partners. Event organizers estimate the number of visitors to range between 3,000 and 5,000. According to Dr. Todd Voss, university president, SWU was listed as one of the few officially approved NASA viewing sites in the country.

    Increased traditional student enrollment and improved retention gave Southern Wesleyan University a strong start for 2017-’18.

    The doors to West Residence Hall, SWU's newest residence hall, opened in August 2017. Increasingly more students are making the Central campus at SWU their home.

    Southern Wesleyan University’s board of trustees elected Sue Rickman as their new chair. New officers and new trustees were also named in October.

    SWU welcomed the first OneLife class to its Central campus in August. OneLife students earn a year’s worth of college credit while traveling, acquiring life skills, growing in emotional intelligence, and deepening their walk with Christ.

    Family, friends and former players were at Southern Wesleyan University Nov. 18, 2017 to honor Head Men’s Basketball Coach Charles Wimphrie Nov. 18 for his more than 30 years of service to Warrior Athletics. Additional honors include naming the basketball court at Tysinger for Wimphrie and the establishing of a scholarship in his name.

    In late 2017, SWU announced the beginning of SWU Online, which will continue the university’s 30-year tradition of offering Christ-centered programs of study for adults.
