2016 P.B. Wood Golf Tournament benefits SWU students
Golf teams teed off Oct. 3 at Smithfields Country Club for Southern Wesleyan University's annual P. B. Wood Golf Tournament, sponsored by First Citizens Bank.
The winning teams are as follows:
- First Place: Rev. Pete Wood, Dan Wood, Rev. Tom Harding, Joey Maxon – winning 2017 JPX 900 irons.
- Second-place: Larry Looper, Brian Lamb, Michael Jordan and Turtle Hyatt – winning 2017 Mizuno JPX Easy Drivers.
- Third-Place: Bob Miller, Benjamin Miller, Darryl Durham and Ben Goforth – winning 2017 Mizuno S5 sand wedges.
- Closest to the Pin: Pete Wood
- Putting Contest: Jamie Jenkins, Landen Hamrick, Michael Putnam and Mike Preusz.
“The funds raised from the P.B. Wood Golf Tournament provide student scholarship assistance and uplifts the areas of greatest need for Southern Wesleyan University,” said Dr. Lisa McWherter, vice president for advancement. This year’s tournament raised approximately $30,000, according to Tony Payne, associate vice president for development.
The title sponsor for this year’s tournament was First Citizens Bank; event sponsor was John Ross Insurance Agency, LLC; platinum sponsor was Absolute Technologies; and the gold sponsor were Coy Huffman and Associates, J. Davis Construction and Miller HVAC.
Other appreciated sponsors include The Fowler Corporation and Cook and Boardman, who served as cart sponsors; while Southern Smiles Dentistry served as the beverage cart sponsor. Edwards Automotive graciously provided the hole in one sponsorship for a new Ford Fusion and Southern Smiles Dentistry for a chance to win $10,000. Taylor Made, Golf USA of Anderson, Toyota of Easley, Pepsi, McAlister’s Deli, Trap Authentics, LLC and the Parkette also served as sponsors for the event.

This was the first time the P.B. Wood Tournament has been played at Smithfields.
