    In 2016, SWU continued on its growth trend with increased enrollment, innovative learning opportunities and new projects, including the addition of a living and learning community to the Central campus. Here are some highlights of 2016 in the SWU community.

    Southern Wesleyan University officials broke ground Aug. 30 on a new four-story living and learning community to be constructed along Wesleyan Drive on the Central campus. More than just a place for students to sleep, the new residence hall represents for President Todd Voss a dream come true that’s been 30 years in the making.

    Starting in Fall 2017, Southern Wesleyan University will house an innovative gap year program designed to help students gain focus while deepening in them an awareness of a calling into a particular career and a deeper relationship with God.

    At the beginning of the 2016-’17 academic year, Southern Wesleyan University again experienced record enrollment.

    Southern Wesleyan University has been accepted as a full member of NCAA Division II, as determined by the NCAA Division II Membership Committee and Management Council.

    On March 14, 2016, SWU, along with the Disabilities and Special Needs Boards of Pickens and Anderson Counties and The South Carolina Board of Disabilities and Special Needs announced the development of the initial phase of a special needs housing community.

    Warrior Athletics announced women's triathlon as the 19th varsity sport. The Warriors will join Belmont Abbey as the second Conference Carolinas school to sponsor the sport. They will be one of seven NCAA Division II schools and one of 13 NCAA schools to offer the sport as a varsity sport.

    The Board of Trustees of Southern Wesleyan University has approved the addition of women’s lacrosse as an intercollegiate sport for the 2016-17 school year.

    For Director of Athletics Chris Williams, another type of win is vitally important. A win for souls.

    More than 400 athletes participated in Area 14 Special Olympics, held for the first time at Southern Wesleyan University April 6 at Joe R. Gilbert Track and Field Complex.

    A group of high school-age youth from as far away as South Dakota spent 10 days exploring what it means to be called by God into ministry. The Called Summer Camp at Southern Wesleyan University presented opportunities and challenges intended to help them fine-tune that calling.
