Understand the human mind, body, and soul.

A BS in Psychology will help you understand why people are the way they are—what makes them tick, their personalities, their mindsets, and their lifestyles—and enable you to use that knowledge to conduct research and help people solve their problems. If that sounds intriguing, a Psychology from SWU is for you. Our holistic approach to psychology is grounded in a Christian worldview that will prepare you for a career or graduate study, and you can complete internships to get real-world experience before graduation.

The Psychology program includes courses on central principles and theories in psychology, as well as multiple concentrations so you can customize your major. As a senior, you can take dual credit courses that count towards both the BS and an MS in Counseling Psychology, enabling you to complete both degrees in 5.5 years.

Concentrations

The Child & Adolescent concentration will prepare you to work with children and adolescents, focusing on the unique psychological needs of people in these age groups.

In the Counseling concentration, you’ll build theoretical and practical knowledge about counseling, laying the foundation for a counseling career or other entry-level positions. (To become a licensed professional counselor, you will need to earn at least a master’s degree.)

The Forensic Psychology concentration focuses on psychology, criminology, and other justice-related topics. The concentration is an excellent introduction to the field of criminal justice.

  • Counselor
  • Department of Social Services
  • Family and child advocate
  • Social worker

Graduates of the Psychology program will be able to:

  • Demonstrate understanding of major facts, issues, and theories within the field of psychology.
  • Think critically about the relationship between psychology and Christianity, using their understanding to serve others.
  • Display the critical thinking and research skills necessary for interpreting and contributing to psychological research.
  • Pursue employment or graduate study in fields related to psychology.
