Help others grow and heal through counseling psychology.

You are interested in helping others and ready to take the next step. An online Master of Science in Counseling Psychology will get you there. Our evidence-based curriculum integrates faith and spirituality with whole-person health, focusing on contemporary mental health theories. You’ll graduate with a firm foundation in ethical and professional standards, whole-person development, and eight core courses designed to help you prepare for the National Counselor Exam (NCE).

The flexible online Counseling Psychology program provides you with a dedicated personal academic success coach alongside caring and experienced faculty. You’ll also get hands-on experience with an in-person practicum or internship that will help you develop relationships with professionals in the field.

You are responsible for understanding and complying with all licensure requirements for your state of residence. SWU cannot guarantee licensure upon completion of the program. You can review South Carolina’s licensure requirements and a state-by-state overview.

Graduates of the Counseling Psychology program will be able to:

  • Summarize, compare, and evaluate the range of counseling perspectives, techniques, and theories relevant to contemporary mental health counseling.
  • Apply counseling perspectives, techniques, and theories to case examples and human problems. 
  • Adhere to ethical and professional values, legal standards, and regulations for clinical mental health counselors across multiple professional settings and interactions.
  • Describe and evaluate their individual whole-person development.

Additional Program Information

  • Submission of completed application.
  • Two letters of recommendation from persons qualified to judge the applicant’s moral character, professional expertise, and capacity for graduate-level work.
  • Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 on all undergraduate course work or on the final 60 hours of undergraduate course work. Students with a GPA of less than 3.0 must have satisfactory scores on the GRE and/or approval by the Graduate Admissions Committee.
  • Official transcripts of all degree-conferring colleges.
  • Applicants for whom English is not their primary language must submit an official TOEFL score of at least 550 (paper test), 213 (computer test), or equivalent evidence of proficiency in English.
  • Satisfactory interview with the designated committee or academic department, if required.

Commencement ceremonies are held on SWU’s campus twice a year in May and December. Online graduates who complete their degree program of study at the conclusion of the summer semester will have their degrees conferred at the December graduation. Letters of completion are available to graduates who wish to confirm to their employers that they have completed their degree program upon request through the Office of Academic Records ( ).
