If you’re ready to advance your career as an educator, SWU’s online M.Ed. in Classroom Leadership program is for you. Our focus is on real, hands-on experience with concepts, tools, and strategies you can apply daily in your classroom and school. You can further customize the degree with a Teacher Leadership or Virtual Teaching concentration.
Our Master of Education in Classroom Leadership covers learning theories, advanced classroom management techniques, curriculum development, instructional leadership, research practices, and much more. You’ll leave with everything you need to support your students, mentor and coach colleagues, and lead school-based teams in problem-solving and goal-setting.
And the best part? You can do it all online.
Concentrations
The teacher leadership concentration offers unique learning outcomes and field experiences that will help you maximize your effectiveness as a teacher leader. This concentration provides opportunities for certificate renewal, endorsements, and professional development in a faith-filled virtual environment.
The virtual teaching concentration includes a South Carolina endorsement for online teaching. In this concentration, you’ll focus on using hands-on tools and strategies to facilitate equitable and accessible student learning in any environment. You will be able to integrate technology-enhanced practices into your face-to-face classroom and teach in a fully online environment.

If you pursue an M.Ed. in Classroom Leadership, you will be able to:
- Apply research-based best practices to teach your subject matter better.
- Manage and supervise students using research-based best practices.
- Use systematic thinking and reflective practices to strengthen instruction and assessment.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues in a professional learning community.
- Conduct scholarship grounded in a Christian ethic of care.
- Submission of a completed application
- Valid teaching certificate from the State of South Carolina or equivalent out-of-state certification.
- Current employment as a teacher such that the teacher’s classroom can serve as a “laboratory” for the completion of course requirements.
- Two recommendations from persons qualified to judge the applicant's moral character, professional expertise, and capacity for graduate-level work. One recommendation must be from School Administrator.
- Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
- GPA of 3.0 on all undergraduate course work or on the final 60 hours of undergraduate course work. (If less than 3.0, student must have satisfactory scores on the GRE and/or approval of the Graduate Admissions Committee.)
- Official transcripts of all degree-conferring colleges and university-level coursework.
- Applicants for whom English is a second language, applicant must submit an official TOEFL score of at least 550 (paper test), 213 (computer test) or equivalent evidence of proficiency in English.

Southern Wesleyan does not advise students on what will or will not be accepted by their state departments of education. Students are encouraged to contact their state department of education to ensure the degree offered by Southern Wesleyan University meets state requirements. Additionally, Southern Wesleyan cannot determine credentials for individuals desiring to teach at the collegiate level as this varies by accreditor and is based on each individual's collegiate credit history.
Degrees are conferred during the May and December commencement ceremonies. Final degree requirements must be completed or in progress to participate in commencement. Students’ degrees will also be conferred on August 31st for those who complete degree requirements after the academic deadline for May graduation and by the end of the publishing ending date of the summer semester. For students who receive an August conferral date, they will be able to participate in the December commencement.
