Southern Wesleyan golf tournament at Pickens Country Club

Geoff Hart

Golf teams will tee off Monday, Oct. 18, at 9 a.m. at the Pickens Country Club for Southern Wesleyan University’s annual Paul B. Wood Golf Tournament, sponsored by First Citizens Bank.

“We’re looking forward to an enthusiastic turn-out and some fun competition at this year’s tournament,” said Heidi Cushman, Southern Wesleyan University development associate. “We have wonderful prizes for the winners this year.”

Each player on the first-place team will receive TaylorMade RAC OS series irons with graphite shafts. Players on the second-place team will win TaylorMade 500 series drivers with graphite shafts. Third-place team members will receive Rossa sport putters. Other prizes include $40,000 hole-in-ones, closest to pin, longest drive and door prizes, as well as a golf getaway weekend gift certificate.

This year’s celebrity golfer will be Geoff Hart, WYFF News 4 Sports Director. Hart will greet the players of this year’s P.B. Wood Golf Tournament and play in the tournament.

Hart’s work at the anchor desk has earned him five Southern Regional Emmy awards. He has also won Best Sportscast in the South Carolina Associated Press Awards and Best Sportscaster from the Electronic News Association of the Carolinas.

“The tournament day begins at 8 a.m. with a continental breakfast. The shotgun start is at 9 a.m. Lunch, awards and prizes will be at 2 p.m.,” Cushman said.

Registration fees are $400 for a four-person team or $100 for an individual player. Sponsorship opportunities are available.

Proceeds from the Paul B. Wood Golf Tournament benefit The Promise Fund – the Annual Fund for SWU.

“The money we raise from the golf tournament will directly benefit students at Southern Wesleyan University by providing scholarships and academic and program support,” Cushman said.

The tournament is named for Dr. Paul Wood, a psychologist and professor emeritus at Southern Wesleyan University.

“During Dr. Wood’s years of service to the university, he has served as a professor, dean of students and academic dean. He is also a golf enthusiast,” Cushman said.
