Essential Databases At Risk...

Are you a regular user of Academic Search Premier, Business Search Premier, ERIC, Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection, MLA International Bibliography, Science, or Nature?  Do you count on some of these for your work in the Education or Business programs?  Our ability to continue providing access to these is at risk, and we ask your assistance.

Discontinued and Endangered Database List

Southern Wesleyan accesses these and other databases, through PASCAL.  PASCAL is our library consortium, and through this group all of the college and university libraries in South Carolina pool their resources to leverage funding and share resources.  Funding for PASCAL databases is provided by the South Carolina General Assembly through non-recurring funds.  This means that each year PASCAL (through the Council on Higher Education) must make a case for repeated funding of these resources.  For the upcoming budget year, the $2 million needed to fully fund PASCAL has been cut by the legislature to $200,000.

Help us make a case for continued SC Budget funding for these essential databases.  Please send your comments to PASCAL about your use of and need for these electronic resources.

These databases are essential resources for many of our majors and programs, including those for Business, Education, Literature, Science, and Social Sciences. Southern Wesleyan does not have the funds to replace most of these databases ourselves.  Please contact Robert Sears or Laurel Whisler if you have questions about Southern Wesleyan's continued ability to access these databases.  Lexis-Nexis and AccessScience have already been cut for the 2008-09 academic year (as of 6/26/08).  We will post updates as we have more information.
