Debbie Holcombe

Southern Wesleyan University Athletic Hall of Fame member Debbie Holcombe has received state recognition for exhibiting excellence in the field of physical education, to which she’s been dedicated for 20 years. Holcombe has served the last nine years as a physical education teacher at Byrnes High School. Holcombe is this year’s recipient of the state Founders Award for Teaching Excellence at the high school level. Holcombe earned the high school level Founders Award for Teaching Excellence, an honor presented by the South Carolina Association of Physical Education and Sport.

Barry Putnam, facilities services director of Wesley Commons, became one of the select group of professionals nationwide to earn the Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist designation, identifying him as one of the industry’s top professionals with skills and knowledge specific to home modifications for aging-in-place. Putnam earned his bachelor’s degree in human resources. Wesley Commons is a continuing care retirement community in Greenwood, S.C.

Pastor, evangelist, teacher and administrator

Dr. Herbert Dongell


Dr. Herbert Henry Dongell went home to be with the Lord on Oct. 23, 2008. He pastored eight different churches from 1946-2003. He served as an evangelist at numerous churches and camp meetings from 1942-1995, taught at United Wesleyan College, Central Wesleyan College (now Southern Wesleyan University) and then served as an adjunct professor in the LEAP program at Southern Wesleyan University.

Dr. Dongell also served in administrative positions for the Middle Atlantic States Conference, headed the Department of Religion at CWC, was a member of the S.C. District Camp Meeting Boards and was Delegate to General Conference. His awards were CWC Yearbook Dedicatee, Teacher of the Year, Ministerial Students’ Plaque of Appreciation for 22 years of dedicated service and Volunteer Community Service and Nursing Home Visitation.
