Our Alumni Association Mission

The overall mission of the Alumni Association is to support enthusiastic and informed ambassadors for the university through service, involvement and effective communication.

Our Alumni Association Purpose

The purpose of SWU Alumni Association is to geographically coordinate efforts of SWU alumni and friends, encourage support of SWU, foster association of former students and promote SWU within one’s community, while providing leadership in support of SWU.

2008-10 Executive Committee

The Executive Committee shall be a Standing Committee of the Association. The Executive Committee shall consist of the President, the President-elect, the Immediate Past-president, and the Executive Director of Alumni Relations. The duties and responsibilities of the Executive Committee shall be as follows:

•  To make recommendations to the Board of Directors concerning Association policies, programs and activities:

•  To manage the affairs of the Association between meetings of the Board of Directors;

•  To meet at the call of the President and/or the Executive Director of Alumni Relations as may be necessary and convenient for the performance of the Executive Committee’s duties; and

•  To exercise such additional powers as may be delegated to it from time to time by the Board of Directors.

The Immediate Past-president:

•  Shall preside over meetings in the absence of the President and President-elect and shall perform such other duties as are delegated by the President.

The President:

  • Shall preside over all meetings of the Association, the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee
  • Shall appoint all committees and committee chairs not otherwise provided for in the Constitution or Bylaws
  • Shall be an ex-officio member of all committees and shall serve as the official representative of the Association to the SWU Board of Trustees.
  • Shall in conjunction with the Executive Director of Alumni Relations develop the agenda for the Board of Directors’ meetings.
  • Shall represent the SWU Alumni Association at appropriate community events
  • Shall develop a specific and measurable Program of Work by May of each year
  • Shall review progress toward achieving the goals in the Program of Work with vice-chairs in September and February of each year.

The President-elect:

•  Shall serve as chair of the Nomination Committee, shall preside over meetings in the absence or at the direction of the President and shall perform such other duties as are delegated by the President.

The Executive Director of Alumni and Constituent Relations

  • keep accurate records of all financial matters
  • Shall ensure that all goals in this document are S.M.A.R.T. goals ( Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Trackable)
  • Shall ensure that those placed in leadership roles have the appropriate skills to support the achievement of the Program of Work.

Who Serves on the Board?

The Alumni Association Board of Directors shall consist of the President, the President-elect, the Immediate Past-president, the Southern Wesleyan University Executive Director of Alumni Relations, a representative from each association chapter and no more than 75 directors total. The Board of Directors should include, where practical, representation from all age groups of alumni, the different institutions whose alumni comprise the membership of the Association, the various degree programs of the university, the different geographic regions where alumni are located, and the various professions in which alumni work. An ex-officio non-voting member of the Board of Directors shall be the SWU President. The Executive Committee may, from time to time, invite the then-current student body president of the university to appoint one or more students to serve as representatives to the Board of Directors, the number of such representatives and their appointment to be as determined by the Executive Committee.

Annual Meetings  

The Board of Directors shall meet at least three times annually in regular session and for any special sessions as called by the Association President.

•  One of these meetings is to be held on the Friday afternoon preceding Homecoming Weekend.

 

•  The remaining two meetings called for each year will be scheduled on the first Saturday of February and the second    

    Wednesday in April.

•  Directors are also encouraged to participate in all appropriate Association activities annually. Each regular and special meeting of the Board of Directors shall follow a written agenda, prepared by the Executive Committee, describing the subjects of discussion. Any other matter may be placed on the agenda by the Association President or by any two members of the Board of Directors three days preceding any regular meeting. The members present at a regular or special meeting shall constitute a quorum.

Vacancies on the Board 

In case of a vacancy caused by resignation, death, disability or removal of a Director, a majority of the remaining Directors shall select any member of the Association to fill the vacancy for the remainder of the term. Directors are expected to attend all regular and special meetings of the Board. Any Director who fails to attend three consecutive such meetings shall be deemed to have resigned at the third such meeting, and shall be subject to replacement as set forth above. A Director may be removed for just cause, as determined by a two-thirds majority of the Board of Directors, and shall be subject to replacement as set forth above.
