Gary Daniel, '03
Newark, Delaware

What does a college education at Southern Wesleyan University and the real world have in common? Plenty!

Gary Daniel can attest to this fact, recalling classroom exercises that gave him the kind of skills he relies on daily.

Daniel was a supervisor at Bi-Lo in Mauldin, S.C., and was looking to for a way to open the doors of career advancement. At age 32, Daniel enrolled in an accelerated adult program for adults then known as LEAP. He already had two years of college under his belt but felt he would like to finish but didn’t want it to take several years. The business program he enrolled in fit his schedule and enabled him to earn his degree in a short amount of time.

Now, as general manager of C&S Wholesale – Northeast Facility, Daniel manages operations for 15 warehouses across the Northeast. He coordinates the logistics of moving vast quantities of food, perishable or nonperishable, to supermarkets in his region.

Learning to think outside the box.

“We do a lot of teamwork projects here on the job, so it’s a benefit to me,” said Daniel. When putting together a team presentation for regional vice presidents and other executives, Daniel appreciates the skills his professors at Southern Wesleyan University taught him. “In every class we had to do a presentation for a final grade for the class,” Daniel said. “Basically what impresses me is how much from SWU I have used on the job.”

“They taught me to think outside the box,” said Daniel, also appreciative of how his SWU education impacted his values. “I am truly blessed.”
