Communications major feels “connected” at SWU

Initially when Phillip Fritts transferred to Southern Wesleyan University from another college he wasn’t sure he would like it. But as he looks back on his SWU experience, he sees how God has helped him grow spiritually with a little help from friends along the way.

Getting involved

“It’s been great, but at first it was new. When I came here all my friends were gone and my classes were different,” Phillip said. Knowing his parents were about to leave for Africa to return to the mission field didn’t help matters. But in a short time Phillip went from being uninvolved and disconnected to feeling very much a part of SWU. In fact, he was recently elected president of the Student Government Association.

Phillip also realized how much his professors cared about him as a person.

“They (my professors) had large classes but had a sense they could tell something was going on with me. I was able to talk with them about what was going on,” he said.

Helping others

“I started realizing what a great place SWU is. You take yourself out and are helping others with their struggle through school,” Philip said.

Phillip says Southern Wesleyan is a great place to learn about yourself and how you relate to others.

“Academics aside, it helps you learn to relate. You make people connections, learn relational skills, and the professors are amazing.”
